The ‘Hoyas for Others’ (H4OYA) Social Impact Alliance aims to connect, celebrate, and foster collaboration among GU alumni of all years and programs who are professionally engaged in social impact, social justice, and/or service -- whether at a nonprofit, university, government entity, corporation, foundation, or in a volunteer role.

Every few weeks, we’ll be sending out this newsletter to highlight the important work that Hoyas are doing in their communities and on campus, and share events, resources and other opportunities that may be of interest.

Here’s the latest news about H4OYA

“The State of H4OYA is great. We are incubating well and ready to break out.”

In a presentation to the GUAA Board of Governors Career Services Committee meeting last month, H4OYA co-founder James Radack (C'89) shared the alliance's progress in its first year, including: two virtual networking events; four editions of the inaugural e-newsletter; new Steering Committee members; growth of social media presence; and partnerships with various GU programs.

Radack continued, "In our 'break out' Year 2, we are aiming to hold our first in person networking events in DC and other locations, grow our community and volunteer leadership, and expand our communications...We've come a long way and now have a good foundation to thrive for the long term.”

Meet these Hoyas making a significant impact in their communities!

Amy Omand (MSB ‘99)

Amy is a Fractional CFO to nonprofits; she helps startup to mid-size nonprofits navigate their financials with expertise, at a fraction of the cost of a full time senior financial leader. She’s recently been working with connections from her MBA alma mater at UC Berkeley to improve the pipeline of finance professionals that are headed into the social sector. She’s open to connecting with other like-minded individuals. Connect with her on LinkedIn or by email.

Urooj Ahmed (C’24)

Recently recognized with the Lena Landegger Community Service Award, Ahmed had a deeply personal call to serve others, namely Afghan refugee women being resettled by Lutheran Social Services. This work “resonated with my values, interests and own past,” said Ahmed. “Having these shared experiences, such as translating for my parents during medical appointments, college applications and day-to-day life, allowed me to better connect with the communities I worked alongside.” Learn more

In Your Shoes, a signature program of Georgetown’s Laboratory for Global Performance & Politics, employs techniques rooted in theatrical performance to promote deep listening and empathy, bringing participants of diverse backgrounds into mutually respectful creative exchange. Participants build communities of trust, often in polarized settings, by engaging in facilitated group activities and pair conversations in which they curate and perform one another’s exact words. At a time when polarization is reaching unprecedented levels with devastating consequences for individual and collective well-being, In Your Shoes™ offers transformative tools for productively encountering a broad range of experiences and perspectives.

H4OYA Steering Committee

The “Hoyas for Others” (H4OYA) Social Impact Alliance is in its first year and incubation phase as an Alumni Alliance/Affinity group. Alumni Alliance/Affinity groups provide a way for Georgetown University alumni to organize around an industry, shared interest, identity or community. Groups seeking to create a new alliance/affinity group follow a phased multi-year approach to demonstrate interest and sustainability for the group. The first phase is an incubation phase where groups begin to recruit volunteers, engage alumni and begin developing an engagement plan to be an active recognized group.
