Heya Hoyas!

Welcome to the latest edition of the the Hoya Social Impact Alliance (HSIA) monthly newsletter!

The Hoya Social Impact Alliance (HSIA) is the first-ever networking community for Georgetown alumni engaged in the social impact sphere. Launched in 2023, it is comprised of alumni from all GU schools who work at nonprofit/NGOs, faith institutions, schools and universities, government agencies, corporations, foundations, and entrepreneurial ventures dedicated to the public good.

To support these alumni, interested students, and the University, the volunteer-run HSIA offers regular programming and communications (like this newsletter) for network building, professional development, and other social impact career opportunities.

To better support your impactful work and career journeys, and to keep building our community, please take 2-3 minutes to fill out our membership form to share some basics (e.g., GU affiliation/school/year; home city; job title and organization; other leadership roles; and social impact interests.)

Here's the WHY:

We are looking to create sub-networks to foster more connections at the micro level for cities and regions, and at the macro level for specific social impact sectors (e.g., Education, Philanthropy). In addition, this info will inform our programming and other content creation, and help us highlight your and others' expertise within this powerful community of 'people for others.'

NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Meet some more of the Hoyas who recently joined the HSIA leadership team

Joey Baugh (MBA/ MSFS ‘23), Denver City Liaison

Joey Baugh is the co-founder of Retrocycle, a borrow-and-reuse system for takeaway and to-go food and beverage. He aspires to create spaces for impact leaders to come together and generate synergy to help drive climate action through community.

Chris Bennett (LAW ‘95), Member-at-Large

Chris Bennett's path to the Georgetown Community, and his current participation in the HSIA, began as a youthful fan of Hoya Basketball, and progressed into graduating from the Law School and engaging with the Georgetown Venture Lab as the founder of a social impact law practice that invented a complementary intellectual property software as a service product to make it easier and less costly for historically under-served innovators to protect and to monetize their creativity - called "IPRights4All™. If we compare his individual life journey to that of a global traveler, by analogy, Chris is: a citizen of the world and of being a family member to a diverse group of biological and chosen people; has stamped his lifelong learning passport with academic and professional credentials (GULC, Berkely, CPM, Esq., GW, JHU, JCSU, MSU, Penn, Six-Sigma, Stanford) that fuel a search for solutions to problems that create value for stakeholders; and maintains permanent residences in self-actualization and pursuing action(s) to improve our local, national, and global society.

Jennifer Li Dotson (SFS ‘96), Seattle-Tacoma City Liaison

Jennifer Li Dotson is a software developer that provides community access to AI powered technology that supports the success of fundraising efforts of over 3000 nonprofit organizations across the globe for Fundraise Up, Classy and GoFundMe. Ms. Dotson currently serves with the US Commission for Civil Rights, Committee on the Status of Women and the Committee on Refugee and Immigrant Affairs. She has worked at the National Bureau of Asian Research, U.S.-China Business Council, American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and the U.S. Embassy in London. Her professional experience also includes executive leadership at the National Kidney Foundation, American Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She holds a BSc from Georgetown University, a MSc from the London School of Economics and speaks two dialects of Chinese fluently. Born and raised in Hawaii, she is a working mom of two school age children that enjoys dancing hula, stand-up paddle boarding, and competing in triathlons.

Kyra Macomber (COL 2028), Outgoing VIEW Intern

Kyra Macomber is a freshman in the College studying government and statistics. Originally from Northern Virginia, she is passionate about social justice and public policy. On campus, she is involved with Outdoor Education, Homelessness Outreach, and Jazz Band. For the HSIA, Kyra helped us develop our student outreach strategy by identifying relevant student groups, courses and professors.

Hoyas! She is currently looking for a social impact summer internship in the DC area. #HireAHoya

HSIA Member Highlights

Chris Bennett (Law ‘95) recently presented at the Global Chamber’s Virtual League of Non-Profits - Beyond Grants & Donors: Legal Pathways to a Sustainable Future for Nonprofits. The goal was to have each participant leave with helpful insights, relevant contacts and the knowledge that they are part of a valuable 'global tribe' community supportive of their goals. To grow the Alliance, we need you! As a member of the team, you can develop leadership, event planning, project management, communications, and membership/organization-building skills; meet and network with a wide variety of Hoyas from all schools, programs, degrees, certificates, and initiatives; and be part of the creation of a professional alliance that will serve alumni, students, the social impact community, and the University for many years to come.

Available roles include:
