Heya Hoyas!

The Hoya Social Impact Alliance (HSIA) aims to connect, celebrate, and foster collaboration among Hoyas of all years and programs who are involved in the social impact sector.

Every few weeks, we send out this newsletter to highlight the important work that these Hoyas are doing in their communities and on campus, and share events, resources and other opportunities that may be of interest.

NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Meet some more of the Hoyas who recently joined the HSIA leadership team

Ben Wrobel (MBA 2023), Lead, Philanthropy Network

Ben Wrobel is a writer, social entrepreneur, and communications strategist. He is the author of the book Letting Go: How Philanthropists and Impact Investors Can Do More Good by Giving Up Control and co-founder and editor of Proximate Press.

Ben has a 15-year career in communications and advocacy. He worked as chief speechwriter for the national NAACP, and later raised money for nonprofits including Stacey Abrams’ New Georgia Project. He has also edited two best-selling books: REACH: 40 Black Men on Living, Leading and Succeeding and The Innovation Blind Spot.

Claire Riesenberg (COL 2008), Lead, Education Network

In practice for 15 years, as an educator and social scientist, Claire Riesenberg’s focus is in Special Education and social-emotional learning. Claire is a licensed clinical social worker practicing in Washington, D.C.

Claire graduated in 2008 from Georgetown College with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Claire is a 2015 alumna of The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work where she was a Dean Barbara White Scholar and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Claire’s interests as an educator span from classroom teaching during covid to analyzing policy and leadership practices. With the Hoya Social Impact Alliance, Claire is excited to connect with Hoyas passionate about working in education whether it’s in the classroom or shaping policy and reform.

Cynthia Mompoint (COL 2002), Lead, Education Network

Cynthia Mompoint is an independent consultant with significant work experience in education, policy & regulations, and business development. She is an educator by nature and her work supports the efforts of nonprofits, agencies, businesses, and organizations to create policy initiatives and programmatic changes that promote equity, accessibility, and accountability.

My “why” in the work I do is to disrupt systemic inequalities and promote equitable opportunities, particularly through education and policy across various sectors. With the Hoya Social Impact Alliance, my “why” is to connect with and empower individuals committed to change by uplifting opportunities for members of the Hoya community to network, grow, and foster idea-sharing. Together, our impact is greater, and we can challenge the established systems to ensure everyone has access to quality opportunities.

Ohm Rattanapun (MBA 2026), Student Representative

Ohm Rattanapun originally hails from Bangkok, Thailand. His hobbies include Pilates, Thai Cooking and Photography. Having experience with children, education and volunteer work in Thailand, Ohm is eager to continually engage in advancing social impact through the Hoya Social Impact Alliance. As a student representative, he aspires to bridge the gap between alumni and current students, fostering meaningful connections and creating opportunities for collaboration in driving broader social impact.

March 3: SXSW EDU hosted by Teach for America

If you’re at SXSW or in Austin this week, there are numerous Georgetown staff presenting/speaking at this event including Georgetown’s Executive Director for Business Impact, Leslie Crutchfield, Hoya Residential Minister Reed Howard, and Research Professor and Director of Georgetown's Edunomics Lab, Marguerite Roza. March 18: Nonprofit Resiliency in a Time of Political Uncertainty Webinar

Join us on March 18, 2025,12:00 -1:00 pm (EST) for “Nonprofit Resiliency in a Time of Political Uncertainty,” a virtual panel conversation co-sponsored by the Boston and DC Regional Clubs; Georgetown’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership (CPNL) at the McCourt School of Public Policy; and the Hoya Social Impact Alliance. The session will be moderated by Dr. Luisa Boyarski (SFS ‘03, C ’16), CPNL Director; and include speakers Valeria Lassiter, adjunct faculty member and nationally recognized nonprofit strategist; Jim Illig (C ‘70), community health leader and board governance trainer; and Mary Delaney Fox (G' 23), nonprofit communications and outreach. March 20: Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Information Session

The Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program is designed as an experiential leadership lab to explore the pressing issues that nonprofit leaders face and strengthen the management capacity of those working with nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. Here’s how you can support the Hoya Social Impact Alliance

The Hoya Social Impact Alliance is in its incubation phase as an Alumni Alliance/Affinity group. Alumni Alliance/Affinity groups provide a way for Georgetown University alumni to organize around an industry, shared interest, identity or community. Groups seeking to create a new alliance/affinity group follow a phased multi-year approach to demonstrate interest and sustainability for the group. The first phase is an incubation phase where groups begin to recruit volunteers, engage alumni and begin developing an engagement plan to be an active recognized group. 

City Liaisons and Network Leads Wanted
To grow the Alliance, we need you! As a member of the team, you can develop leadership, event planning, project management, communications, and membership/organization-building skills; meet and network with a wide variety of Hoyas from all schools, programs, degrees, certificates, and initiatives; and be part of the creation of a professional alliance that will serve alumni, students, the social impact community, and the University for many years to come.
